Dear Friend:

It has been another exciting year at the Science Center! We have seen many successes – new exhibits and programs, the opening of New Hampshire’s first nature preschool, and the recent renewal of our accreditation by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums for another five years. Squam Lakes Natural Science Center continues to be a strong, vital institution, beloved by many and opening a window to the natural world for thousands of visitors from across the state and region.

However, it has also been a challenging year. Trail attendance numbers and revenues are down this summer after a banner year last year. The number of school groups continues to decline for a whole host of reasons and we are constantly exploring new ways to adapt to the changing face of modern-day education – our new distance learning capability is one 21st century advancement that the founders of the Science Center could not have dreamed of back in 1966.

Our Annual Fund goal this year is $300,000 and we need your financial support more than ever to meet that goal. The Annual Fund helps to care for and feed our 80-plus ambassador animals, to maintain our buildings, trails, and exhibits, provide excellent educational programs, and makes it possible for us to provide new opportunities for more people to learn about New Hampshire’s natural world.

We hope you find the Squam Lakes Natural Science Center to be an important resource that stimulates and educates; that provides value to the community, and enhances the region. Please support the 2011 Annual Fund at whatever amount you can afford to give. No gift is too small . . . or too large! For every child who experiences an up-close nature moment (like 2-year old Sophie getting eye to eye with a dragonfly), for the moms and dads who count on a fun learning place to spend family time, for the volunteers who share their time to teach others, for the good feeling of knowing your gift can make a difference, please be as generous as you can.
