ANNUAL FUND – Help Plant A Seed of Wonder

Most of us have memories of places and events in our childhood that created a lasting connection to the natural world. Perhaps it was finding a bird’s nest in our backyard or playing in a leaf pile in the fall with a cherished friend. Perhaps it involved a fort in an old gnarled maple, a walk through a milkweed patch filled with Monarch Butterflies, or a visit to a local nature center. For many of us those seminal moments planted a seed of wonder in our hearts and fostered a life-long connection to the natural world.

Today, many children are devoid of those natural connections. Their connections are virtual; experienced through computer monitors or cell phones. Children’s lives are so structured that “just going outside to play” is a thing of the past. This nature deficit disorder is causing much concern amongst psychologists and environmental educators.

For more than forty years, the Squam Lakes Natural Science Center has provided enriching natural experiences that help plant those priceless seeds of wonder. Your annual fund gift makes it possible for us to underwrite a major portion of the costs associated with our school group programs, allowing us to continue to provide outstanding and affordable classes that meet the needs of our schools and our mission of advancing understanding of ecology by exploring New Hampshire’s natural world.

We continue to update and improve program offerings. In the coming months, our talented education staff -- under the guidance of the Board Education Committee -- is incorporating themes exploring the role of humans in the dynamic nature of the Earth’s environment into many of our programs and exhibits.

Please support our Annual Fund campaign with your generous gift and allow us to continue to provide opportunities for you, your family, and New Hampshire’s students to get nearer to nature.
