INDOOR PROGRAMS

Animals with Bad Reputations
Grades 9-12
The "public image" of some animals is often inaccurate and leads to attitudes that can be detrimental to wildlife and our environment. Join us to take a close look at the good qualities of these animals.
Available at SLNSC or school site
Fall, winter, spring, summer

Birds of Prey
Grades 9-12
Raptors are birds of prey, which use talons to capture their food. Viewing live birds and mounted specimens, students will examine the key role these avian predators play in the natural world.
Available at SLNSC only
Fall, winter, spring, summer

Mammals of New Hampshire
Grades 9-12
Students will look at structural and behavioral traits that distinguish mammals from other classes of animals and consider the important role they play in New Hampshire's valuable natural communities.
Available at SLNSC or school site
Fall, winter, spring, summer

Owls of New Hampshire
Grades 9-12
We will examine the variety of raptors native to New Hampshire, focusing on owls.  By using live birds, prepared mounts, and hands-on props student will learn key ecological messages about these winged predators.
Available at SLNSC or school site
Fall, winter, spring, summer

Predator/Prey Dynamics
Grades 9-12
Predators play a vital and sometimes misunderstood role in the natural world. Students will observe several live predators and learn about their amazing adaptations, which help them to survive. Students will also examine the essential role predators play in the wild.
Available at SLNSC or school site
Fall, winter, spring, summer

Winter Bird Banding
Grades 9-12
We have banded and monitored birds at our winter feeders for more than 25 years. Student teams will contribute to this long-term study by helping to make observations at a feeding station and participate in bird banding under the guidance of a Master Bird Bander. Discussion topics will focus on bird adaptations, migrations, and identification using live birds and mounted specimens.
Maximum group size is 30. Program is 2 hours. Fee is $6/student.
Available at SLNSC only
Winter (until March 15)

OUTDOOR PROGRAMS

Field & Forest Ecology
Grades 9-12
Students will investigate the differences between the natural communities of fields and forests. Through hands-on scientific studies, teams will measure wind speed, temperature, soil pH, humidity, and more, and then compare and contrast the measurements between the two communities.
Available at SLNSC only
Fall, spring, summer

Lake Ecology
Grades 9-12
Join us on our floating classroom to study Squam Lake! Using hands-on investigations of pH, dissolved oxygen, water hardness, clarity, temperature, and more, student teams will be able to judge the lake’s health. Teams of students will also collect lake sediment and a plankton sample to observe under a bioscope in the lab. All data collected will be posted on our website so teachers can compare results from past years!
Limit of 14 students/boat, with a maximum of 42 students for three boats scheduled for one time. If your group exceeds 42, we suggest that one half explore the exhibit trail while the other half is on the boats, then exchange.
Program is 2 hours.  Fee is $175.00/boat/program.
Available at SLNSC only
Fall, spring, summer
