INTERNSHIP OPPORTUNITIES
Program Internship - 2008 Program Internships have been filled
A summer internship at the Squam Lakes Natural Science Center is an opportunity to learn and grow while experiencing many facets of this nationally-accredited nature center. Interns assist with various projects, programs, and special events. During June, interns observe and assist with school field trip programs. In July and August interns divide their time among three basic areas:
1. Animal Care/Volunteer Docents – Interns gain experience caring for the animal collection under the guidance of staff Animal Caretakers. Interns also interact with and assist volunteer docents with live animals and education props on a daily basis.
2. Guided Discoveries – Guided Discoveries are week-long, full and half day educational programs for children ages 4 to 13 years old. Each intern will spend three weeks working with and helping plan Guided Discoveries under the guidance of educators.
3. Outreach/Projects – Interns assist naturalists with scheduled off-site outreach programs. Interns also gain hands-on experience helping to maintain exhibits and trails and choose assignments to complete from a project list.
Interns present “Up Close to Animals” presentations. These brief talks provide the general public an intimate experience with a live animal and a chance to ask questions. Interns act as “rovers” with live animals or education props on the exhibit trail, providing informal education to visitors. Interns assist with various special events as needed.
